Fans Before Mans

Did you know there are different types of volume fans?  Lash artists can pinpoint which to use immediately based on the clients natural lashes, manageability, and style they want.  But how are you, the client, supposed to know which to book?

Below is a guide to the different types of lash extension fans and what lash artists use them for.

Handmade Fans

Handmade fans were first to arrive on the scene.  With this method, the artist will create the fan by shimmying their tweezers so the lashes splay out evenly.  This type of fan is the most customizable.  The amount of lashes per fan, curl types, weight of lash extensions, and how narrow or wide to make the fan all play a part in determining the desired look.  It is the most cost effective, but the on the downside, it is also the most time consuming.

Picture
Types of looks:  Since these are so customizable, they will work for virtually all looks to create fullness and fluff.  They're also great for layering and creating textured for wispy lashes.  We can use handmade fans in every set on our menu except for classic lashes!

Recommended for:
  • Clients who struggle with retention-handmade fans wrap the natural lash, giving more surface area to bond.
  • Clients who have fine or sparse lashes.  The lash artist has more control as to what lashes go on your natural lash, which means a look that will hold up better and allow your growth cycle to remain in optimal condition.
  • Clients who want an eyeliner look, fox eye, skyline, or looks that require a specific curl.

Not recommended for:
  • Clients who are limited on time
  • Clients who want an ultra dense look

Premade Fans

Premade fans are just what you'd think.  They are lash extensions already made into a fan from the manufacturer.  Because the lash artist doesn't have to spend time creating the fan, they can apply more premade extensions than handmade in the same amount of time.

Types of looks:  Premade fans are great for creating density.  Fuller volume and hybrid looks as well as mega volume sets are the preferred styles for these fans.   Volume Express, Hybrid Boost, and Mega Volume are all styles on our menu using premade fans.

You can also swap handmade fans out for premades in any of our "spiked" looks.  We love this options because spikes (or "closed fans," more about them in the next section) can take away from density.  Using premades allows the artist to quickly add fans to the lower lash layer,  which creates a defined
 lash line.

Recommended for:
  • Clients who go three weeks in between fills.  At three weeks, there will be a significant amount of grown out lashes and new growth that will take longer to replace.  Premade volume fans speed up the process.
  • Clients who get "spiked" or textured hybrid looks but want a darker lash line
  • Clients who want density
  • Clients who still struggle with retention.  Although your retention may not be better with premades, you won't always be playing catch-up since the artist can get more on within the same time allotment.
Picture
Not recommended for:
  • Clients who want an eyeliner look, fox eye, skyline, or looks that require a specific curl.
  • Clients who want or need shorter length.  Premades lengths are limited.
  • Clients who don't want added cost to their service.

Closed Fans

Also known as: bundles, wet lashes, or spikes.  For this technique, we use the same lashes we do for our handmade fans, but instead of splaying them out, we create closed bundles that poke straight up.

Types of looks:  The styles on our menu that use closed fans are our Spiky Half Set, Wet Lash, Spiked Hybrid, and Spiked Volume.

Recommended for:
  • Clients who like dimension and a wispy look
  • Clients who want length, but don't have strong natural lashes to support it
  • Clients who want a defined lash line

Not recommended for:
  • Clients who want density over length
  • Clients who want an ultra natural look

Wanting Less but Still Giving the Most

So, you've pulled the trigger and switched from your full volume 13s to a wispy hybrid set, but when you look in the mirror, you feel your extensions aren't making your eyes pop the way they used to. They're not showing up in photos, and you feel like they're invisible after a little bit of shed. So, how do you embrace the clean-girl aesthetic while still feeling like your lashes are giving you that vibrant fresh face?

The problem with "natural" lash extension looks

What actually defines your eyes is your lash line. With volume looks, we do this by loading up the lash line with fans, which creates darkness and density at the lash line. However, it's going to create darkenss and density above the lash line as well. Although some clients can rock this look beautifully, many are starting to feel this look is too heavy and are ready for something more natural. The problem is, when we take out the fans to get a more natural look, we lose the darkness of the lash line.

The Solutions

Luckily, there are lots of new trending techniques out there that allow us to enhance the lash line without bombarding your natural lashes with fan & fluff. Here are some of our recommendations:

Winged Half Set

This set uses soft curls focused on the outer corner to give you a "liner" look."  Not every lash is lashed, but the placement of those that are make the ultimate winged look.
Picture

Skyline Volume

We're still using fans to define that lash line, but each fan has varying lengths.  Since not all extensions are reaching max length, you get much softer looking volume.
Picture

Spiked & Wet Lash Looks

Spikes or "closed-fans" can be used to create a ton of different looks.  A spike mimics a classic lash, but with better definition, texture, and retention.  To get a more natural but defined look, try spiked hybrid or wet lash (pictured.)
Picture

Soft Curls with Short Lengths

Going shorter and softer places the bulk on the lash line by concentrating the lashes to one area.
Picture

Anime Half Set

We use a new lash style called "laser cut" to create this look.  These fans allow us to create the perfect anime spikes!

Hybrid Boost with Longer Classics

Hybrid boost are premade so we can get more fans on to enhance your lash line.  Longer classics add wispiness and texture.

Why Lash Lifts Are More Popular Than Ever

8/17/2025

If you’ve been searching for a natural lash service that delivers noticeable results without the hassle of extensions, it’s no surprise you keep hearing about lash lifts. Over the last few years, lash lift treatments have become one of the top trending beauty services—and the demand isn’t slowing down in 2025.  But why are lash lifts so popular? Let’s break down the key benefits and why so many clients are choosing this low-maintenance lash treatment over other lash services.

1. Natural Looking Results That Enhance Your Eyes
One of the biggest reasons women love a lash lift is because it uses your natural lashes. The lashes are gently curled and lifted from the base to create the appearance of longer, fuller lashes—no extensions or lash strips needed. It gives you an instantly refreshed, “bright-eyed” look without any heavy makeup.

2. A Low-Maintenance Lash Treatment (No Daily Upkeep)
Unlike lash extensions, lash lifts require almost zero maintenance. You don’t have to worry about fill appointments, adhesives, or fall-out. The results typically last 6–8 weeks, making it a perfect lash service for women with busy schedules or anyone who prefers a minimal beauty routine.

3. Skip Mascara & Still Look Polished
Lash lifts give the appearance of curled, mascara-coated lashes—even when you aren’t wearing any makeup at all. Many clients love pairing a lash lift with a lash tint to completely eliminate the need for mascara. This makes the service especially popular in warmer months and while traveling.

4. Gentle & Ideal for Sensitive Eyes
Because lash lift services don’t use extensions or glue, they are often safer and more comfortable for clients who have experienced irritation from lash extension adhesive.

5. Aligns with the “Clean Girl” / Natural Beauty Trend
Searches for “clean beauty” and “natural beauty services” have skyrocketed—and lash lifts fit perfectly into this trend. The treatment enhances your natural beauty without looking overdone, and clients love the effortless, fresh-faced result.

6. Fully Customizable (Soft Curl or Dramatic Lift)
Every lash lift can be customized based on your eye shape, lash length, and the type of curl you want. Whether you prefer a soft curl or a more dramatic lift, your lash artist can tailor the treatment so you get the exact look you’re going for.

Final Thoughts: Why Lash Lifts Are Worth It
In short, lash lifts are popular because they deliver natural looking results, require little to no upkeep, and perfectly fit the clean beauty trend. They’re a smart, long-lasting alternative to lash extensions—and an easy way to elevate your everyday look.

Head Spa Benefits: Why Scalp Treatments Are Essential for Healthy Hair

8/10/2025

When it comes to hair care, most people focus on shampoos, conditioners, and styling products — but healthy hair actually begins at the scalp. One of the fastest-growing wellness trends, Scandinavian and Japanese head spa treatments are transforming how we approach hair and scalp care.

More than just a relaxing service, a head spa is a specialized scalp treatment designed to deeply cleanse, improve circulation, and restore balance. Here’s why head spa treatments are becoming a must-have for anyone serious about hair health.

Picture
1. Head Spa Benefits for Hair Growth
If you want stronger, thicker hair, your scalp needs just as much attention as your strands. Over time, dead skin cells, excess oil, and styling product residue can clog hair follicles, making it harder for new hair to grow.

A professional scalp treatment for hair growth, like a Scandinavian or Japanese head spa, removes buildup, stimulates follicles, and creates the ideal foundation for healthy, vibrant hair.

2. Deep Relaxation and Stress Relief
One of the most loved head spa benefits is the deep relaxation it provides. Using specialized massage techniques, a head spa treatment releases tension in the scalp, neck, and shoulders while increasing blood flow to the scalp. This not only nourishes the hair follicles but also helps reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and boost overall well-being.

3. Promotes Scalp Health and Balance
Whether you struggle with dryness, dandruff, itchiness, or excess oil, a head spa can help restore your scalp’s natural balance. By using targeted products and treatments customized to your scalp type, these sessions improve both comfort and appearance while supporting long-term hair health.

4. Natural Boost to Hair Growth
Unlike harsh chemical treatments, scalp massages during a head spa improve circulation naturally, ensuring oxygen and nutrients reach the follicles. Many clients notice thicker, shinier hair after a few sessions — making this one of the most effective natural scalp treatments for hair growth.

5. The Ultimate Self-Care Ritual
In our busy, fast-paced lives, a head spa offers a moment of peace and renewal. The combination of soothing water therapy, aromatherapy, and gentle massage makes the experience as beneficial for the mind as it is for the hair.

Why You Should Try a Scandinavian/Japanese Head Spa
A head spa isn’t just a beauty treatment — it’s a holistic wellness experience. From promoting hair growth to improving scalp health and reducing stress, its benefits go well beyond the surface.

Whether you’re looking to grow healthier hair, address scalp concerns, or simply indulge in deep relaxation, a head spa treatment could be exactly what your hair and mind need.

Calling all Lash Lovers...Borboleta Lash Serum was made for ALL lash clients...extension girls--that mean you, TOO!

Hey 𝑙𝑎𝑠ℎ 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 clients! Did you know Borboleta 𝑙𝑎𝑠ℎ 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑢𝑚 was made for YOU too?

Let me share some of the benefits we’ve discovered that can combat those challenges some clients experience with lash extension:

> ʀᴇᴛᴇɴᴛɪᴏɴ

Everyone has different lash shed cycles. Some people cycle through their lashes quicker than others. Obviously, if you have a quick shed cycle, you’re lash extensions will shed with them, causing poor retention. With this product, clients natural lashes appear to retain better, leading to better lash extension retention!

> ᴡᴇᴀᴋ ʟᴀsʜᴇs

Lash extensions are not immune to the laws of physics. If a lash extension is too heavy for a natural lash, it will droop, twists, or even fall off. Some clients just have finer, weaker lashes, that struggle holding the weight of extensions. Borboleta’s lash serum contains 𝑏𝑖𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑛, 𝑘𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛, 𝑝𝑒𝑝𝑡𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑠, 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑠, & 𝑝𝑢𝑚𝑝𝑘𝑖𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡 which conditions and nourishes for stronger, healthier lashes!

> ᴘʀɪᴄᴇ ᴘᴏɪɴᴛ

Lash serum is price-pointed at only $65 by design! Knowing us lash lovers already spend a pretty penny on our extensions and lifts, they had hope this affordable price point would encourage clients to use it with their lash services.
Picture
> ғᴏʀᴍᴜʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ

Clients ask us all the time if their lash serum is ok to use with extensions. And the answer is 🤷‍♀️ We don’t know those products or what the manufacturers had in mind when they developed them. But we do know Borboleta’s; each ingredient was carefully selected as to not disrupt the lash extensions or break down the adhesive as other products may.

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

To stain or laminate...that is the question...

Oh so many questions about brows...

What's the difference between a stain and lamination?  Or maybe you've decided on lamination, but should you tint/stain them too?  Or you may be concerned going with a stain or lamination might be too bold...should you just do a brow wax and tint?  Before you know it, you're so confused, you've decided to just stick with what you've been doing...getting an add-on 5 minute brow wax at your nail salon!  Or worse...NOTHING!

With so many options, it can be very confusing.  In most cases, it’s just preference on what type of look you’re going for, but even knowing what type of look you want can be overwhelming, especially if you're not use to working with your brows.  So, I've put together a guide of the most popular brow services: what they are, how long it will last, and who it is and isn't recommended for.

Brow Stains

ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:
> Clients looking to create a defined, crisp shape
> Clients who prefer a brow wax

ɴᴏᴛ ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:
> Clients with oilier skin may not hold color on the skin
> Clients who only want to tint brow hairs and not the skin

Brow Lamination with Tint

ᴡʜᴀᴛ ɪs ɪᴛ?
> Brow hairs are chemically treated to lift hairs up and into a shape

> Color will last on skin for 1-3 days and on hairs 4-6 weeks

ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:

> Clients who want a “fluffier” full shaped brow
> Clients who don’t require a brow wax
> Clients who want to add shape with color

ɴᴏᴛ ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:

> Clients with missing or very sparse areas of the brow
> Clients who require a brow wax

Lamination Only (No Tint)

ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:

> Clients who want to cover grays

ɴᴏᴛ ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:

> Clients who want to darken their brow hairs or cover grays

> Any hair removal method can be added to this service: waxing, tweezing, and/or trimming.

ɴᴏᴛ ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:
> Clients who want to create a shape but do not have much to work with (try henna, or for a more permanent solution, microblading.)

Brow Sculpt

ᴡʜᴀᴛ ɪs ɪᴛ?
> Mapping, waxing, trim & tweeze if needed, makeup app, and consult all in one

ɴᴏᴛ ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴅᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ:
> Anyone can get this service

I hope this sheds some insight on what is the perfect brow service for you.  If you're still confused, we recommend you schedule a consult so you can decide what to do next!  Happy brow-ing :)

Lash naked...

2/22/2021

I have been lash extension naked for the last several months and discovered a lot of things about the world of the extension-less.  Here are my findings for achieving amazing lashes without the maintenance of lash extensions...
Picture
1) Use a serum. IMO, and from looking at lashes all day, everyday, Borboleta Beauty's 𝐿𝑎𝑠ℎ 𝑆𝑒𝑟𝑢𝑚 is the best on the market from their price-point as well as the formulation.

2) You will see your max results of a serum kick in around 6-8 weeks. This is the perfect time to ditch your eyelash curler and get a 𝐿𝑎𝑠ℎ 𝐿𝑖𝑓𝑡 & 𝑇𝑖𝑛𝑡!

3) Since a lash lift chemically treats the eyelashes, it’s important to use a conditioner. I use Thuya 𝑅𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐶𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑚 every night on my lashes.

4) Make them POP! Tints are great, but if you want additional length and fullness, you’ll want to apply a mascara. Use one that’s formulated for lash lifts that will add additional nutrients and keep your lashes at their best! We recommend Elleebana 𝐸𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝐵𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑎 and it’s fabulous.

5) Tightline your eyeliner (just YouTube if you're not sure about this.)  This will give the same illusion as that dark lash line that extensions give.  I prefer to use a black or dark brown powder for mine.  I recommend Billion Dollar Brows.  I use their Brow Powder in Raven and love their eyebrow brush for applying it.  It's a little thicker than traditional angle brushes but adds the perfect amount of powder for me.

6) Keep your lashes CLEAN! Just because you no longer have to listen to your lash artist harassing you about cleaning your extensions doesn’t mean you can neglect your lash hygiene! Makeup, serums, and natural oils can build up, cause sties, bacteria growth, and even cause your lash growth cycle to hibernate and stop lash growth! Keep those babies clean with Borboleta Beauty’s cleansing system: 𝐿𝑎𝑠ℎ 𝐵𝑎𝑡ℎ, 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝐷𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑢𝑝 𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟, & 𝐶𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑆𝑤𝑜𝑜𝑝 𝐵𝑟𝑢𝑠ℎ.

There you have it! The perfect lash routine for the lash obsessed!
